Moore (JOSEPH HAMPTON mayor)

JOSEPH HAMPTON, mayor of Philadelphia; born in Woodbury, N.

J., in 1864. After graduating from public schools he became a reporter and assistant editor of the Philadelphia "Public Ledger." In 1895 he entered politics and became Chief Clerk of the City Treasurer, and in 1901, City Treasurer. In 1905 he was elected to fill an unexpired term in the House of Representatives, and then from 1907 to 1919 successively re-elected as the candidate of the Republican party. In 1919 against the will of the leaders of the Republican party in Philadelphia he won the nomination for mayor of that city and took office in January, 1920.
