Nikisch
ARTHUR, a Hungarian musical conductor; born in Hungary in 1855 and educated at the Vienna Conservatory. He conducted for the first servatory. He conducted for the first time in the Leipsic Theater, doing so the position as conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he remained until his return to Hungary in 1893.
He then succeeded Reinecke as the con- Leipsic. From 1902 on he appeared nearly every year in London as conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin. His last appearance in the United States was in 1912, when he made a tour as conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra.
