Bitts

Sea Terms

Forecastle bitts are perpendicular timbers stepped in the keel and extending above the deck; used for securing towing-hawsers, etc. Quarter bitts are those found on the quarters of vessels, used for fastening anything to--the sheets of fore-and-aft sails are belayed to them.
