Chains

Strong, narrow plates of iron bolted to the ship's timbers through the side. To the upper end of these plates dead-eyes are secured by an iron strop. The ship's channels are also called chains, as the fore-chains, main-chains, and mizzen-chains. (See Rudder Chains.)
