Lengths of rope made fast to and hanging under a yard, or along the bowsprit, end of the spanker-boom, and jib-boom for men to stand on while bending, unbending, reefing, and furling sail. These ropes were formerly known as horses. The bights are supported or held up by stirrups hanging from the spars.
