Knot

Sea Terms

To make a bunch in a rope. (See engravings.) A division mark placed on a log line which answers to a mile of distance on the ocean. In other words, the divisions on the log line are made to be of the same proportion of a sea mile (6,080 feet) as the 30" glass is to an hour, viz., the one hundred and twentieth part. Hence the 120th of a sea mile is 50 feet and 8 inches, which will be the distance apart for the knots on the line used with a 30" glass. (See Log.)
