Riding Down

To ride down a halliard is to have the men go aloft and, grasping the rope, swing their feet clear of all support, and, while holding tight to the halliard, allow their aggregate weight to overcome the resistance offered. As the yard or gaff goes up the men come down, when the latter mount the rigging nimbly, if required, and once more tail on to the halliards.
