Ways

The timbers on which a vessel slides into the water in being launched. Hauled up on the ways means to cradle a vessel on the ways, then by mechanical means haul ways and vessel up an inclined plane until out of water. These ways are sometimes termed marine railways. (See Dry Dock.)
