Whistles

Several short toots of the steam whistle signifies that there is confusion of ideas--that a misunderstanding exists. A steamship under way indicates her course to an approaching steamer as follows: One short blast meaning, "I am directing my course to starboard" (helm ported); two blasts, "I am directing my course to port" (helm astarboard), and three blasts. "I am going full speed astern."
