15-16-Thomas, who had been shut up within the fortifications of Nashville, came out and engaged Hood in a two days' battle, inflicting a tremendous defeat on his forces. In fact Hood's splendid army was virtually destroyed, and Sherman was now free from all danger in that direction, during his march to the sea.
