19-Early having been reinforced returned and attacked Sheridan's army, at Cedar Creek, during that general's absence. Sheridan hearing the cannonading miles away, rode at full speed to the field and found his troops routed and in utter confusion. His presence so inspired his men that they turned about, and in a short time had won a decisive victory. In this campaign Sheridan lost seventeen thousand men, but he destroyed Early's army, and made Washington safe from attack by way of the Shenandoah.
