January, 1865

15-Fort Fisher, North Carolina, was captured by the Federals. It was attacked by Commodore Porter's fleet, and a land force under General Butler. Butler decided, after a Federal repulse, December 24-25 previously, that the fort could not be taken. General Terry took command of Butler's forces, with a reinforcement of fifteen hundred men, and after a bloody and prolonged fight, sustained by the fire of Porter's fleet of seventy vessels, compelled the garrison to surrender.
