MANUFACTURES. -A few classes of manufactures are important. Cotton goods are produced in Aargua, Appenzell, St. Gallen, Zug, and Zurich. There are more than 1,000,000 spindles employed in this industry, and 20,000 operatives, besides nearly 40,000 hand-loom weavers. At Appenzell and St. Gallen more than $2,000,000 worth of embroideries are annually produced. Basel is noted for its silk ribbons, sending out over $6,000,000 worth a year; while Zurich also produces over $8,000,000 worth of silk stuffs. Bern, Geneva, Neuchâtel, Solothurn (Soleure), and Vaud return 36,000 persons engaged in watch making, the yearly output being over 500,000 watches, valued at upwards of $10,000,000. In nearly all the cantons wood carving is extensively carried on.
