China. The denominations of money used by the Chinese in accounts are "Taels," " Mace," "Candareens," and "Cash." There are no national gold and silver coins. For large payments, bullion of known purity passes current by weight. The cash is the only coin issued. It is of mixed metal, and the value of 1000 is about 55. 11/2d. The value of the mace is 7d., and of the tael 5s. 10d. Bank notes vary from 300 cash to 1000 taels.

Cyprus. In 1878 a new bronze coinage was executed. It consisted of a piastre of 180 grains; a half-piastre of 90 grains, and a quarter-piastre of 45. The coins have on the obverse the effigy of Queen Victoria, the words Victoria Queen, and the date; on the reverse the numerals " 1," " 1½," " 14," with the words "Cyprus," and one piastre, etc., over and under them. The silver coins contain 37 parts of pure silver and 3 parts of alloy. The copper coins are the piastre, half-piastre, quarterpiastre, 5 para piece, and para. Gold.
