To make metal imitations of these precious stones, procure a glass rod and grind the end to the form of whatever it is intended to imitate. Dip the ground end of the rod into reflector metal, which has been previously freed from scum; the metal will adhere to the ground surface and form a hollow cap of extreme brilliancy which answers to the design ground on the end of the rod. Dies, To harden.--In order to produce an equal degree of hardness throughout the entire surface of a die, it has been found best to let fall a copious stream of water from a reservoir placed above, directly upon the centre of the die. This is a superior method to direct immersion, as the rapid formation of steam at the sides of the die, consequent on the later mode, prevents free access of the water for removing the heat with the expedition requisite for obtaining a hard surface at the centre.
