Tenement House
a house divided into tenements occupied by separate families. In tenement houses the landlord does not usually reside on the premises.
Apartments are let in suites and single rooms. Owing to their crowded condition these houses present problems of sanitation impossible of solution, and are breeding places of disease and nurseries of plagues in times of epidemics. In some cities tenement houses are under police surveillance, and stringent laws have been enacted to secure sanitary conditions and to prevent over-crowding, but their existence is still a problem that sociologists have vainly tried to solve.
