To Wash China Crape Scarfs
If the fabric be good, these articles of dress can be washed as frequently as may be required, and no diminution of their beauty will be discoverable, even when the various shades of green have been employed among other colors in the patterns. In cleaning them, Take of blue galls, bruised, 4 ounces; logwood, make a strong lather of boiling water, suffer it copperas, iron filings free from grease, and to cool; when cold, or nearly so, wash the sumach leaves, each 1 ounce. Put all but scarf quickly and thoroughly, dip it immethe iron filings and copperas into 1 quart good diately in cold hard water in which a little vinegar, and set the vessel containing them salt has been thrown (to preserve the colors); in a warm water bath for twenty-four hours, then add the iron filings and copperas and shake occasionally for a week. It should be kept in a well-corked bottle. It may be applied to faded spots with a soft sponge. It is good also to restore the black color of leather when it turns red, the leather being previously well cleaned with soap and water.
