Lighthouse

A tower erected on the coast line, or upon rocks or over shoals, which acts as a beacon by day to warn mariners, and at night the large lantern at the top of the tower is brilliantly lighted, throwing its beams in some cases twenty miles seaward. The various lighthouses are distinguished by the tabulated character of their lights, as red, white, fixed, flashing, etc.
