Maul
A heavy wooden sledge-hammer, useful in the foundry for many purposes for which iron ones are objectionable. They are especially effective for settling down iron copes on a sand-joint, bedding-in large patterns, or any purpose where a steel-faced hammer would be likely to break or mar the surface struck.
