Academia
A public garden or grove in the suburbs of Athens, about six stadia from the city, named, according to Pausanias, from Academus, who left it to the citizens for gymnastics. Here Plato opened his school of philosophy, and hence arose the Academic sect, and the name Academy has descended even to our own times.
